       Непроницаемым покровом тайны окутана смерть сэра Чарлза Баскервилля на дартмурских болотах. Племянник покойного приезжает в родовое имение, но и ему угрожает жестокая смерть. Легенда гласит, что загадочная гигантская собака преследует ненавистных Баскервиллей из поколения в поколение. Знаменитый детектив Шерлок Холмс и его верный друг доктор Уотсон раскроют тайну, разгадка которой окажется куда более приземленной.
       ► Главное достоинство этого фильма в том, что он открывает замечательный цикл 14 картин, где роль Шерлока Холмса исполняет Бэзил Ратбоун. Актер как будто всю жизнь готовился к этой прославленной роли: уже в 1-м фильме он смотрится идеальным Шерлоком Холмсом, которого не в силах затмить ни один исполнитель. Картина оригинальна тем, что привычки и вкусы главного героя (игра на скрипке, любовь к переодеванию и пр.) занимают в ней не менее важное место, нежели дедуктивные способности. В последней фразе даже содержится прямой намек на пристрастие Холмса к наркотикам.
       Студия «Fox» постаралась на славу, создав для имения Баскервиллей гигантские декорации в готическом стиле. Говорят, декорации эти были так велики, что в них заблудился герой-любовник Ричард Грин. В дальнейшем эстафету подхватит Рой Уильям Нилл, который привнесет в цикл свойственные себе едкость, элегантность и болезненность; однако уже 1-е звено в этой цепи картин выполнено на более чем достойном уровне. Два 1-х фильма цикла (этот и Приключения Шерлока Холмса Алфреда Уэркера, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) сняты на студии «Fox» в 1939 г., и действие их разворачивается во времена Конан Дойла; остальные 12 сняты с 1942 по 1946 г. на студии «Universal» с гораздо более скромными бюджетами; в них действие переносится в современность. Лучшая из этих картин, по нашему мнению, - Женщина в зеленом (The Woman in Green, 1945) Роя Уильяма Нилла с превосходными актерскими работами Хиллари Брук и Генри Дэниэлла в роли Мориарти.
       N.В. Другие версии: во Франции (Le chien des Baskerville, производство студии «Eclair», 1915), в Германии (Der Hund von Baskerville, Рихард Освальд, 1915 и 1929), в Великобритании (В. Гэрет Гундри, 1931; Теренс Фишер, 1959; Пол Моррисси, 1977). Версия Моррисси пытается быть комичной: Питер Кук играет Шерлока Холмса, а его приятель Дадли Мур - одновременно доктора Уотсона и мать Шерлока.

       Siempre recordaremos a Sidney Lanfield por, Desde aquel beso (You’ll Never Get Rich, 1941), en la que Rita Hayworth era la pareja de baile del gran Fred Astaire. Por lo demas, unas cuantas comedias sosas con Bob Hope, alguna comedia musical “sobre hielo” con la noruega Sonja Henie, una interesante version de El sabueso de los Baskerville (The Hound of the Baskervilles, 1939), con Basil Rathbone en el papel de Sherlock Holmes, y un unico y modesto western, con mas encantos de los que cabria imaginar. La carrera cinematografica de Lanfield, con la Fox, Paramount, RKO y otras, se extiende entre 1930 y 1952. Despues, dedicara casi quince anos mas a la realizacion televisiva.
